Regular academic advising is a critical aspect of a successful academic experience. Extended Campus advisors work with you throughout your program, typically from your initial inquiries through graduation. Successful advising requires effort from both advisor and student. Below is Extended Campus’s philosophy on advising and some guidelines about what to expect from your advisor and what your advisor will expect from you.

See the
Advising Timeline
for overview of process from admission to graduation
Academic Advising Mission Statement:
Academic advising is a collaborative educational process whereby students and their advisors are partners in meeting and ensuring academic, personal, and career goals. This partnership is built over the student’s entire educational career at PSU and requires proactive involvement by both parties. Both students and advisors have clear responsibilities for ensuring that this partnership is successful.

Expectations of Students:

  • know the university and classroom policies that affect you
  • schedule regular appointments and/or contacts each quarter or as needed
  • come to appointments prepared with questions and/or subjects to discuss
  • be open to developing and clarifying your personal values and goals
  • keep a record of your academic progress and goals
  • accept responsibility for your decisions and actions (or inactions)
  • take note of my communications to you about relevant events, dates, or rule changes
Expectations of Advisors:
  • help you understand university policies as they relate to you
  • create an education plan, which is a clear roadmap to your educational goal
  • provide a safe space in which to share your thoughts, aspirations, concerns, and interests
  • provide resources and referrals
  • listen carefully to your questions, concerns, and confusions
  • maintain strict confidentiality
  • encourage and support you as you gain the skills and knowledge necessary for success
