Degree requirements
Portland State University’s Extended Campus Program online provides the upper-division credits needed for completing your bachelor’s degree.

Students must complete 180 credits to earn an undergraduate degree. The social science major requires 72 upper-division credits. The liberal studies major requires 81-85 upper-division credits chosen from the three academic areas of arts and letters, science, and social science.

The Graduate School of Education at Portland State University offers a series of upper-division online courses designed to offer in-depth, research-based knowledge on important areas of preschool curriculum.

Designed for early childhood professionals working with children 1-5 years of age in a variety of settings anywhere in the United States, including:

  • Head Start
  • Child care
  • Preschool and kindergarten
  • Early intervention

Courses may be used as credit toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree with the approval of their academic adviser. There are no prerequisites.

The ECE Certificate of Completion program
The PSU ECE Certificate is an 18-credit program culminating in a certificate of completion (nonlicensure). The certificate is available to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students who complete six 3-credit online ECE courses (18 credits), at either the undergraduate or graduate level, are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion in Early Childhood Education.

The certificate program does not require formal admission to the University. Students can take courses in any order or complete the 18-credit certificate program in sequence.
